"Singapore shines with world class music and arts" - Channel News Asia
Sonia is a performer, performance-maker and facilitator from Singapore. Formally, her work sits between theatre, performance art and dance, with a focus on exploring the body as material and body politics through varying artistic manifestations.
Sonia often creates collaboratively, and is interested in disruptive intersections. Currently, she is an associate artist with dance company P7:1SMA, which creates works in-between contemporary and traditional. Sonia is also developing her solo practice: she performed her original work Hymen Instinct in Taiwan for the 2018 Asia Weekend Theatre Festival.
This will be Sonia’s third time performing at Neon Lights. She embraces all things kooky and fantastical, and is excited to embody Leeroy’s creations!
Started in 2014, Aliens of Manila is a multi-platform series directly referencing a certain New York based viral photography blog site.
The series captures strangely costumed bodies interjecting and inhabiting the streets of Manila, this staged displacement eliciting varied responses from the public and somehow transforms the context of the chosen sites.
A collaborative project featuring personalities who practice on the fringe as its models, the series plays upon the idea of the offbeat characters who thrive on the edge of the urban landscape.
The series is expanding to actively include other countries and cultures in the spirit of migration, the artist as service provider, and the OFW (overseas Filipino workers) phenomenon. The artist’s mother who is also an OFW, having worked as a nanny and caregiver in the United States for almost 17 years, supplied valuable information about the migrant condition as well as modelling as an alien at one point. The series is manifested in residency projects, short films, photography, exhibits, workshops, and performances.
Sonia will collaborate together with Leeroy New and fellow Singaporean performer Jereh Leung for the first time to present Aliens of Manila x Singapore at Neon Lights Festival.
