Riot !n Magenta

Riot !n Magenta

Saturday Nov 10th

Riot !n Magenta’s journey could be said to be one of sonic alchemy. Known for their distinctive soulful melodies lined with edgy, rhythmic beats, the sextet crystallizes the diverse musical elements of electronica, trip-hop and soul into smooth, synth driven tracks.

Weaving together the powerhouse vocals of Eugenia Yip with the mellow synths of Hayashida Ken, and the tight, precise rhythms of Khairyl Hashim (guitar),Jean Ferry (guitar), Sulaiman Supian (bass) and Ritz Ang (drums), the sextet from Singapore released their long awaited self-titled LP on digital platforms on July 12th. Riot !n Magenta originally formed as a duo using laptop playback for their live shows. Wanting to break free from technology and create music in a more organic sense, the band have adopted a no-laptops policy for their live shows, and perform everything with their respective instruments.

As artists seeking to constantly re-invent themselves, the musicians are driven by their desire to explore and blur the conventional boundaries of sound. Charmed by that spirit, Riot !n Magenta have previously been invited to perform in festivals such as St Jerome’s Laneway, Baybeats, Mosaic, Ignite and Singapore Night Festival. The band have also been seen supporting Chvrches and Circa Waves.

Lead single ‘Five’ gives a sense of those new dimensions that Riot !n Magenta have been probing. The crystalline synths and guitar lines stream over the robust drums, while one-of-a-kind vocalist Eugenia Yip plumbs a yearning for connection and draws out the anxieties that give the song its momentum which can be view HERE
